In 1873 he accepted the position of Assistant Commissioner in the newly formed North-West Mounted Police, and the following year led a police column to southern Alberta and established Fort Macleod. My dearest Mary

If the weather has been the same out with you as it has been here all day you have had a nice trip in to Mashquotch. It snowed like fun last night and the ground is covered with a mantle of white but not enough for sleighing.

I dined last night with Lady Macdonald she was excessively kind to me. There were only herself her sister and a Miss McPherson from Kingston whom I have known for a number of years. Lady Macdonald goes to Montreal on Thursday to meet Sir John and to be present at the St Andrew’s Ball on Friday night. She asked me to come with them - indeed pressed me to do so, so I have made up my mind to go. It will be very nice to be there under Sir Johns and her patronage. I wish so much you could be with me.

Lady Mc spoke so nicely about you. She said Clarke had written that you were perfectly splendid and congratulated me on having such a treasure. I agreed with her, dear old pet nothing too good can be said of you. I of course gave them a full account of Miss Nell how she had curried all before her in the way of wiping the eyes of all other babies she had come across from the Rocky Mountains to Toronto. I also remarked that she was not Cherubim or Seraphim as she did not continually etc. Would you not like to have my whiskers to pull?

I have just had a long talk with Mr. Scott, he appeared very much pleased to see me. It seems very queer to feel that he has no more command over us. He asked very kindly after you. I hear that he is very hard up, in fact that they are in great difficulties.

I have got my boots and shoes from Blackford they are very nice. I saw a coat today trimmed with Silver fox in Devlins fur store price $250.00 the fur is not half as good as yours. I hope you like yours. I trust I will hear from you tomorrow but I am rather afraid you wont write before you get to Mashquotch.

With endless love and heaps of kisses for my pet my pearl my own dear girl. Her own Jim.
